The Centre dismissed M. Karunanidhi’s government on January 30, 1991. The DMK leader blamed President R. Venkataraman for “murdering” democracy and acting as a “handmaid” of Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. But Venkataraman defended the action, saying the LTTE had been “attempting to use Tamil Nadu as a base” for its activities
